Matthew 2:11 & Isaiah 1:13-18

And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Matthew 2:11

Each Christmas, we give our children three gifts to remind them (and us) of the three gifts brought to Jesus, which helps to keep everyone focused on why we celebrate Christmas. But as I was reading Isaiah a few days ago, I pointed out to the kids that even though the gifts the wisemen brought were rare and expensive, they aren't what God wants from us. He wants us to live for Him, to turn from evil, do good, seek justice, defend orphans, and help widows. Why do we do this? Because He washed our sins away and made us white as snow.

Isaiah 1:13-18
13 Bring no more futile sacrifices;
Incense is an abomination to Me.
The New Moons, the Sabbaths, and the calling of assemblies—
I cannot endure iniquity and the sacred meeting.
14 Your New Moons and your appointed feasts
My soul hates;
They are a trouble to Me,
I am weary of bearing them.
15 When you spread out your hands,
I will hide My eyes from you;
Even though you make many prayers,
I will not hear.
Your hands are full of blood.
16 “ Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean;
Put away the evil of your doings from before My eyes.
Cease to do evil,
17 Learn to do good;
Seek justice,
Rebuke the oppressor;[a]
Defend the fatherless,
Plead for the widow.
18 “ Come now, and let us reason together,”
Says the LORD,

“ Though your sins are like scarlet,
They shall be as white as snow;
Though they are red like crimson,
They shall be as wool."

Romans 12:1-2

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Romans 12:1-2

Happy Thanksgiving (a few days late). This is the time of year we give thanks. Let us always give glory to the One who blesses us. Psalm 75:1 We give thanks to You, O God, we give thanks! For Your wondrous works declare that Your name is near. The most wondrous gift of all for which we should be thankful is our salvation through Christ. 1 John 5:11 And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. As we step into the Christmas season, and celebrate the birth of Christ, I need to show my thankfulness by my actions, living my life for God out of thankfulness for the redemption of Christ. My focus should be on giving and showing my children through my example. When I keep this in the forefront of my mind and heart, the holiday season isn’t daunting at all.

1 Peter 5:7

Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.

1 Peter 5:7

Many times I wake up in the early hours of the morning long before my alarm is supposed to beep. I can lay there for hours without being able to fall back to sleep because of my racing mind, thinking, and worrying. Sometimes it’s nervousness, doing something exciting, or a cold that wakes me and keeps me awake. I’ve realized that if I stop thinking about all that’s going through my mind and life and just pray, then I fall asleep quite easily. I pray for each family member, immediate and beyond. I pray for my church families. I pray for those with whom I work, adults and children. I pray for specific church ministries local, national, and abroad. I also pray for missionaries, naming each I know or have heard about through my church and Christian publications. And before I know it, I’ve fallen into a peaceful sleep.

Proverbs 14:7

Go from the presence of a foolish man, when you do not perceive in him the lips of knowledge. Proverbs 14:7

Walk away. It’s what we were always told to do. It’s what I’ve told my own children…..sometimes.

It takes self-control (Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control ) to walk away instead of saying something you’d regret. However, it’s also important to know when to walk away and when to stay and defend what you believe (1 Peter 3:15 and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you). I also remind my kids that if it is an adult, they have to be respectful and listen, honoring those in authority over them, whether they think they are right or not (Hebrews 13:17 Obey those who rule over you).

Ephesians 2:8-9

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. Ephesians 2:8-9

Happy Reformation Day.
I'm very thankful to God for those in the 16th century who risked their lives so that I can now freely read and study the Word of God today almost five hundred years later. May I never take for granted the privilege it is to have, read, and study the Bible (even on my iPhone!). The verse above is one of the passages that convinced Martin Luther that we are saved by faith in Christ, and not by our works. On October 31, 1517, he nailed the ninety-five thesis to the church door in Germany, which ultimately began the Protestant Reformation.

Jeremiah 29:11

For I know the thoughts I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11

This passage is such a comfort in all walks of life: for college age kids who are struggling with making decisions regarding their degrees and coursework, as well as those who are just finishing their schooling and stepping out into working full time. This verse can also be a blessing to young mothers who go through each daily task wondering if there is anything beyond wiping noses, washing laundry, and doing dishes. Although we may not know what lies ahead, God knows. He has our life plans mapped out already. Such a weight goes from my shoulders when I really let that sink in.

Acts 20:35

I have shown you in every way, by laboring like this, that you must support the weak. And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” Acts 20:35

Last spring, when I was given my new assignment for this school year, I was quite upset and worried. Mostly because of my lack of knowledge in the medical field regarding the needs of the student I would be working with this fall. I have definitely been challenged while caring for this five year old who is in a wheel chair, visually impaired, cannot speak, and has a feeding tube. However, after four weeks of working with her, Acts 20:35 has taken on a whole new meaning to me. She is a doll and such a joy to work with each day. By her giggles, smiles, and the patting of my arm for reassurance of my presence, I am so blessed.

Ecclesiastes 7:10

Do not say, “Why were the former days better than these?” For you do not inquire wisely concerning this. Ecclesiastes 7:10

We often hear older people wishing for the days gone by. But over the weekend, I found myself sort of doing the same thing. I was perusing some of my favorite blogs and was reminded of our home schooling years. Reflecting back, I remembered how good we had it, with quality simple family time during the day before spending the evenings running around to all of the kids’ activities. But things changed, the kids are older and loving where they are regarding their schooling. I now need to ponder this passage in Ecclesiastes. If I were to ask the question, “Why were the former days better than these?” then I’d really be struggling with discontentment of the present time, and really, that’s not the case at all. Looking back can be done with fondness, without yearning, but my focus should be on the blessings I have right now and enjoy them.

Colossians 4:6

Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one. Colossians 4:6

School has started, so I’m back to pushing my four children to strive to do well on their homework assignments and tests. Nagging them all evening and weekends makes for an unhealthy relationship with my kids. I’ve memorized this verse, saying it to myself each morning to keep it engraved on my heart so that my words to them may be with grace, encouraging them in love.
During the day, I work in an elementary school building with over five hundred K, 1st, and 2nd graders. On a regular basis, I am encouraging students to make better choices regarding their behavior. I have a lot of opportunity to practice this verse! I pray that my admonishments are always with grace.
However, this verse doesn’t just mean the words from my lips. It also applies to what comes from my fingertips. Oh, how easy it is to quickly type out an email and send it, only to regret seconds later what I said. I’ve slowly been training myself to read and reread emails that I’ve written before hitting the send button.

Today is the first day of school for my kids and also for me. I read these verses to them last night before bed, and encouraged them to do what is right, and not "do what everyone else is doing." Any bad influence of their peers can be strong, but they need to stand firm in their faith and not be tempted to do what is wrong, even if the majority is doing it.
Later, as I thought more about that passage, I realized how easy it is for me to do what everyone else is doing. Yelling at the ref. for making a bad call & complaining about the weather are two perfect examples. The list could go on and on.
I need to heed these words of Paul just as much as my children, to be a godly example to them as well as to others who are watching.

1 Peter 4:8

And above all things have fervent love for one another, for “love will cover a multitude of sins." 1 Peter 4:8

From the time my children could talk, my husband taught them to say, “I love you Mommy” explaining to them that they will get out of a lot of trouble with those four simple words. He was right. My oldest is fifteen years old. It still works. My heart melts, my shoulders relax, and I let out a sigh. I immediately respond with, “I love you, too.” Not to say that the kids go without discipline. What usually follows is that my anger quickly dissipates and we’re able to deal with the issue at hand in a much more loving way.

Psalm 36:7 & Psalm 118:1

How precious is Your lovingkindness, O God! Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of Your wings. Psalm 36:7
We planned a big lunch party celebrating my dad’s 70th birthday at our family business next door. I was getting ready to grab the cake and head out the door, hoping I wasn’t late as I saw numerous vehicles and roaming kids in the parking lot. My husband calmly walked in, scooped up his wallet and keys from the counter and said he was taking Caleb, our 13 year old son, to the E.R. because he fell out of a tree and probably broke his arm. The “oh” that came out was filled with fear and concern, but immediately squelched by, “He’ll be fine. Do you want to come with us?” A peacefulness blanketed me and I said, “No, call with updates.” I then prayed for quick healing and wisdom for the nurses and doctor who would be treating him. I never did actually see my son, as they pulled out before I managed to make it to my vehicle with cake in hand. That was a good thing, I soon learned.
I walked into the office and was quickly bombarded with questions and concerns. Those who saw Caleb right after he fell said he looked pale and greenish, was scratched up and bleeding, and had also hit his head. However, I was still unshaken. I enjoyed the food and festivities, and a couple of hours and texts later, it was confirmed that Caleb was fine, but had a buckle fracture of the radius. I Googled and found that it was the quickest healing break. It wasn’t until later that I realized how blessed my son was in that he only broke his arm. My husband said he was very worried as thoughts of neck/spinal injuries were going through his mind…it’s the EMT/fire fighter in him. It didn’t help that a teacher/administrator at Caleb’s school fell out of a tree last fall and is now paralyzed neck down. I was so thankful that his situation didn’t cross my mind and that my husband kept his own fears to himself. God shielded me from worries and for that I am very thankful. Thankful also for how quickly the human body heals itself. Psalm 118:1 Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever.

Five Books That Changed Who I Am

I’m altering my style of blogging for this post.

I was “tagged” to give a list of “five books that changed who I am.” Thank you Kellie http://bluehouseacademy.blogspot.com/ for tagging me, it gave me something to ponder (and type) while at church camp with all of the kids last week.

My “list of five” are books that are reflections of God’s Word, the Bible – which is the ultimate Book. The stories I have chosen are ones that show God at work in the lives of His people, some fiction, and others non-fiction.

The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom.
I’ve read this book twice, first on my own and the second time to my children who at that time were ages nine, ten, twelve, and thirteen. After reading it (and re-reading it) I have become much more thankful and have a better awareness of God’s blessings which He has bestowed upon me. When difficult experiences arise, I often find myself thinking, “If Corrie and Betsie can go through all of THAT, then I can do…..” The following verses come to my mind as I think back on how I have grown as a Christian after reading The Hiding Place.

Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Psalm 119:11 Your Word I have hidden in my heart that I might not sin against You.

Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.

Psalm 56:11 In God I have put my trust; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?

Eric Liddell: Running For a Higher Prize by Renee Meloche
This is actually a children’s book that I read to my kids when I homeschooled them. (We watched the movie, Chariot’s of Fire, after reading this book). Eric Liddell’s convictions were an encouragement to me to continue to put God at the top of my priorities on Sunday and to rest from my labors, which has been challenging, especially with four children who are involved in many activities that sometimes occur on Sunday. It also gave my children a clearer understanding (not just a lecture from their parents or pastor) of why we need to rest from our weekly activities.

Exodus 20:8-11 Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.

Isaiah 58:13-14 If you turn away your foot from the Sabbath, from doing your pleasure on My holy day, and call the Sabbath a delight, the holy day of the Lord honorable, and shall honor Him, not doing your own ways, nor finding your own pleasure, nor speaking your own words, then you shall delight yourself in the Lord; and I will cause you to ride on the high hills of the earth, and feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father. The mouth of the Lord has spoken.

Stepping Heavenward by Elizabeth Prentiss
Two words that sum up this book: spiritual maturity. I read this when I had a couple of toddlers and a baby. I thought I was quite mature regarding my spiritual life. And then I read this book. It made me look deeper into my life and my heart. I grew up in a Christian home and went to church every Sunday. I heard, read, and memorized the Bible; and I prayed before and after meals, and at bedtime. However, applying all of that to my heart and life was a bit lacking. This book pushed me to do so, to be of service more for others, not just for myself and my family.

James 1:22-25 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the Word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.

Philippians 2:14 Do all things without complaining and disputing.

Mansfield Park by Jane Austen
After reading Pride and Prejudice a few years ago, I fell in love with Jane Austen. I went on to read all of her books. While P&P is probably my favorite, Mansfield Park was the one that I could relate to the most. Throughout high school, I was considered a “goody-two-shoes.” Although this book didn’t “change who I am”, reading this book made me realize that what I thought was not very common for a teenager was and is actually a struggle for many young Christians: that it is alright to follow the straight and narrow as a teen, that Christianity isn’t something you start to do when you become an adult. I also know that only by God’s grace was I able to withstand the temptations and grow as a Christian, even at a young age.

1 Timothy 4:12 Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.

Ecclesiastes 1:9 That which has been is what will be, that which is done is what will be done, And there is nothing new under the sun.

Galatians 6:7-9 Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.

Matthew 7:13-14 Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.

The Wednesday Letters by Jason F. Wright
I just read this book last year. I am intrigued by diaries and letters and decided to Google books written in that format. This happened to come up so I checked it out from the library and read it. I immediately had my mom read it, who then bought the book and passed it around in our family for others to read it, too. It is absolutely wonderful. The story is the epitome of forgiveness.

Ephesians 4:31-32 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.

Colossians 3:13 bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.

The rules say to (1) tag between three to five people, (2) link back to this post, (3) call the post "Five Books that Changed Who I Am," and (4) enjoy.
However, I don’t read very many blogs. So, I’m sort of breaking the rules and skipping that part. If you aren’t (or are) a blogger, I’d love for you to share your list of “five books that have changed who you” are in the comments section.

Proverbs 27:9, John 15:13-14, & James 2:23

Ointment and perfume delight the heart, and the sweetness of a man’s friend gives delight by hearty counsel. Proverbs 27:9

I am so blessed with godly friends. It’s wonderful to see how God places certain people in my path each day who give me the advice and encouragement I need. Friendship with them is such a special treasure. However, friendship with God and His son, Jesus, is even better, and best of all.

Greater love has no one than this that he lay down his life for his friends. John 15:13

You are my friends if you do what I command. John 15:14

And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” And he was called the friend of God. James 2:23

For through a friendship relationship with God and Jesus, not only do we gain everlasting life, but we have them with us at all times and in all places. God’s Word, the Bible, is our daily bread, our encouragement whenever and wherever we are. Take the time to read and learn from it each day. Nurture and be thankful for that friendship, just as we are thankful for the people God has placed in our lives as friends.

Ruth 3:11 & Proverbs 31

And now, my daughter, do not fear. I will do for you all that you request, for all the people of my town know that you are a virtuous woman. Ruth 3:11

Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies. The heart of her husband safely trusts her; so he will have no lack of gain.
She does him good and not evil all the days of her life. Proverbs 31:10-12

Strength and honor are her clothing; she shall rejoice in time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and on her tongue is the law of kindness.
She watches over the ways of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her:
Many daughters have done well, but you excel them all. Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, but a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised.
Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her own works praise her in the gates. Proverbs 31:25-31

June is traditionally a wedding month. As we attend various weddings, we pray that the groom and the bride have chosen well. Knowing a person’s insides is imperative. Is she virtuous, does he fear the Lord? People are known by their fruits. Fruit inspections are important if marriage is at all on the horizon. It’s also important to know that we are being watched. I’m sure Ruth was surprised when Boaz said that all the people of his town knew that she was a virtuous woman. He was watching. When people watch us, do our actions and conduct show that we are virtuous and God fearing? I’m going to our church youth camp this summer as a counselor for the girls. I think I’ll use these passages for one of our nightly devotions.

1 Samuel 16:14-23

But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and a distressing spirit from the LORD troubled him. And Saul’s servants said to him, “Surely, a distressing spirit from God is troubling you. Let our master now command your servants, who are before you, to seek out a man who is a skillful player on the harp. And it shall be that he will play it with his hand when the distressing spirit from God is upon you, and you shall be well.”
So Saul said to his servants, “Provide me now a man who can play well, and bring him to me.”
Then one of the servants answered and said, “Look, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, a mighty man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a handsome person; and the LORD is with him.”
Therefore Saul sent messengers to Jesse, and said, “Send me your son David, who is with the sheep.” And Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread, a skin of wine, and a young goat, and sent them by his son David to Saul. So David came to Saul and stood before him. And he loved him greatly, and he became his armorbearer. Then Saul sent to Jesse, saying, “Please let David stand before me, for he has found favor in my sight.” And so it was, whenever the spirit from God was upon Saul, that David would take a harp and play it with his hand. Then Saul would become refreshed and well, and the distressing spirit would depart from him.
1 Samuel 16:14-23

Whenever my kids play soothing classical pieces on the piano, I smile and think of King Saul. Soothing music does calm edgy nerves, anxiety, etc… Thank you, Lord, for giving us music.

Isaiah 61:11

For as the earth brings forth its bud, as the garden causes the things that are sown in it to spring forth, so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations. Isaiah 61:11

I’m always amazed each spring how the trees and grass quickly go from brown and drab to colorful and lush. Over this past week, I’ve watched a bud bloom into a beautiful rose. The irises are flourishing everywhere and the peonies are just beginning to blossom. We planted our vegetable garden last week, too, and are watching and waiting for tiny shoots to pop through the ground.

We know these things will occur. It happens each and every spring. This verse in Isaiah gives us the understanding that just as we see these things spring forth in the natural world, no matter what happens in the world of people, He will be praised. His people will declare His glory and His righteousness. Wickedness abounds, we see it in the news each day, but God reigns. And even in difficult times, reporters stand a bit dumbfounded as they interview people who have lost homes through devastating tornados or floods giving glory to God and showing thankfulness to Him for their spared lives.
May God use us to continually bring forth praise to all nations.

Romans 7:19-25

For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me.
I find then a law, that evil is present with me, the one who wills to do good. For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man. But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.  O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?
I thank God—through Jesus Christ our Lord! Romans 7:19-25

These words from Scripture, as well as from the song, "How Deep The Father's Love For Us"
"...that He should give His only Son and make a wretch His treasure..." bring me to my knees.
A prayer on my heart daily: Thank you God for Your mercy and grace. I am so undeserving.  Thankfully it's not my merits, but Your love. I pray that I can put away my old man and put on the new and live my life daily, hourly, minute by minute for You.

Luke 9:46-48

Then a dispute arose among them as to which of them would be greatest. And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a little child and set him by Him, and said to them, “Whoever receives this little child in My name receives Me; and whoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me. For he who is least among you all will be great." Luke 9:46-48

For my personal daily devotions, I like to pick a new book of the Bible at the beginning of each month. This month, I'm reading the book of Luke.
Friday afternoon, I was given my new assignment for next year as an instructional assistant. It didn't turn out as I expected. I was upset because I felt it's not challenging me regarding my level of education, BA Elementary Ed. (K-6 certified) and having my Master's degree in art education (certified art K-12). I cried. A lot. It was a very long and frustrating evening. I did not sleep well that night.
Saturday morning, on the 9th, I read Luke chapter 9. It smacked me in the face. God's timing is perfect. I now have a new perspective and pray I can be used by God in this child's life.

Romans 5:3-4 & John 3:16

And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope. Romans 5:3-4

My heart and prayers go out to those who were and still are being affected by the earthquake in Japan last Friday, March 11. While it is difficult to understand now, God's faithfulness, love, and mercy will bring them through and make them stronger as they move forward in their hope in the Lord. May those who don't know Him turn to Him.
On this day of 3-16, John 3:16 is our glorious hope, "for God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."

Romans 5:8

But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8

John 3:16
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

1 John 3:18
My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth.

This time of year, we’re told to demonstrate our love by giving flowers, cards, chocolate, and diamonds. God demonstrated His love to us by sending His Son to die for our sins. And then He goes on to say that we must love as He has loved:

John 15:12
This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.

John 13:34
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.

We don’t need to use candy, cards, or jewelry to demonstrate that love. Serving, putting others before ourselves, helping the poor and needy, offering food, drink, clothing, and shelter to those without, and helping the sick, the widows, and orphans are all ways that we can demonstrate our love to those around us.

Psalm 139:14

I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Marvelous are Your works,
And that my soul knows very well. Psalm 139:14

I had the privilege of visiting triplet baby boys the day after their delivery. They were so tiny, just above three pounds each. As I looked at them through the glass of the isolettes, I marveled at the details of their features, from their toes to their fingernails, their adorable noses and beautiful lips. I had to keep my emotions in check as I didn’t want anyone to think I was saddened by all of the tubes and machines. It was pure joy and awe, not sadness, which engulfed me. I prayed for each child and for their parents the whole time I was at the hospital, and continue to do so, not only for God to give healing, growth, and development, but also to guide them and their parents as they embark on this new adventure of life.
If you have the opportunity to visit a mother in the hospital who has just given birth, don’t hesitate to do so. Hold the baby if you are able to, pray over the child, and marvel at God’s handiwork. For they are fearfully and wonderfully made.

James 4:13-15

Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit”; whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.” James 4:13-15

As we step into the new year of two thousand eleven, we gaze ahead. For me and my family, we look toward the remainder of the school year and then into our summer: vacations, camps, activities, and so forth. Do we seek the Lord’s will when making these plans? Do we pray for wisdom when deciding what to do or where to go? I typically reserve asking God for wisdom on weighty decisions like career, spouse, children, and educational choices. However, this verse (and Proverbs 19:21 There are many plans in a man’s heart, nevertheless the LORD’s counsel—that will stand) remind us that we should seek the Lord’s will for all our plans, not just the hefty ones. Are they godly? Will they bring Him glory? When our plans become altered, do we adjust and accept the changes? These questions and verses offer me much to ponder, and pray for, this coming year.
